As we continue with the theme that Mindset Matters, let’s discuss an overarching concept in development: The idea of a Growth Mindset vs a Fixed Mindset.
I’ve now been in this sport for nearly a decade, and I’m empowered, excited and eager to see what lies ahead. 2020 has thrown its fair share of challenges our way, but we are more than willing to roll with the punches as long as it means our business is alive and thriving on the other side. But how did I get here? Keeping an optimistic mindset doesn’t come from having good luck and things constantly go my way.
What I do have is a “Growth” mindset, one that is persistent and ever-evolving for the sake of Harpoon. You’ve heard many businesses this year use the word “pivot” but this idea is more than a pivot, it’s a way of thinking about challenges and one that you should adopt, too.
A “Fixed” mindset is one that believes you are fully developed intellectually and athletically. Although most of us are unlikely to be doing CrossFit if we have this mentality, talking about the high points is a good reality check to see if you’re resorting to a negative way of thinking. When problems arise, you blame others (OR COVID) and often walk away from the challenge. You are easily overwhelmed, threatened by others’ success or even convince yourself that you’ll never be that skilled.
A growth mindset, however, is one that embraces hard work and persistence. All skills might not come easily, but you recognize that with some concerted effort, you, too, can be just like Alyssa (or Caelin, or Tania, or whomever you choose). You welcome feedback, take correction, and are often OPEN to other people’s ideas. You believe that, with determination and grit, you can achieve what you set your mind to.
I’ve put together this nifty infographic for you to think through this idea of two competing mindsets. Which one do you choose?
