The first Open workout is announced this week! For those of you who don’t know, CrossFit’s Home Office announces the workouts at 8pm on Thursday nights. Dave Castro, the Director of the Games, does a fun announcement via YouTube or Facebook if you want to tune in. Otherwise, your coaches will lead you through the standards, the flow and requirements for the workouts during your class times.

As a reminder, for the next three Fridays, class times are adjusted by 15 minutes to accommodate the flow of the open. The app will post the correct class times and openings available. Open workouts are only allowed to be done on Fridays or Sundays (Sundays will have a special 930am class to accommodate The Open for three weeks.

For the next three Fridays, classes will look a little different. We will not have a “skill/strength” portion of class. Your coach will spend the first five minutes of the class reading through the “rules” or “standards” of the workout. Each movement will be demonstrated, explained with common faults, and illustrated in a way that you will know exactly how to meet expectations. Once standards are covered, you will pick a partner, and we will split the group into Who Goes First and Who Goes Second.

The group who is tackling the workout first will warm up while the group who is tackling the workout second will prepare your partner’s equipment and score sheet. Workout group one will be judged (i.e. count all their reps) by their partner. At the close of the workout, we will have a 10-minute transition break to allow group two to warm up. Group two will be judged by the person who just worked out. If the workout requires more warm-up time, we will be sure to build it in.

The Coach of the class is not allowed to judge as they are the time keeper and standard police.

Standards in CrossFit are the rules of the game. They are what keep us safe and honest, but also keep us moving the needle toward a common goal. Points in basketball are only made when the ball passes through the hoop. The same occurs in CrossFit: there are reps and no reps. If the standard range of motion isn’t met, there is no point scored. Misses happen and it’s not the end fo the world but it doesn’t get added to the scoreboard regardless of whether the point was made. Stay honest with you and your partner.

Think of it this way, if you are questioning your depth, height or rep, you’re probably not meeting the requirements. Your judge should have an easy time counting your reps!

Teams: By now, you should have selected a group of three more people to form your team of 4. On Mondays by 6pm, your team will submit ONE total rep count or ONE total cumulative time. Each team will have a place-card where they will submit their team sheet for the week. There will be a box on the bench near the restrooms. Designate ONE person to submit your team’s total scores and add it to the appropriate folder. If you don’t have a team, please let a coach know and we will find you a great one!

Official submission to Games.CrossFit.com: You are not required to register online on the Games website for your score to count in our in-house competition. If you choose to do so, I (Maddie) have until 8pm on Wednesday following the close of scores to validate scores. Your score will not display on the worldwide leaderboard until I validate your score. The sooner you submit your score, the faster it will get published as I will approve chunks of scores Saturday morning, and Tuesday mornings. If you miss the submission deadline, there is absolutely nothing that I can do. My suggestion is to submit your score the minute you are finished with the workout on Friday and then withdraw your score if you re-do it and choose to submit a second one.
