Harpooners:
Happy first official day of summer. It’s been a wild first six months of 2021, and I’m still trying to figure out what month it is.
I’m so thrilled to see more of you showing up more consistently than ever. Your scores are extremely impressive, your skills are improving, and your lifts are getting stronger by the week. Hang on, the next six months is going to be a wild ride!
This week, I want to talk about the idea of how we commit to something. Watching Kara & Nathan this past weekend, seeing the CrossFit Games Semi-Finals play out, and even watching how our friends and family take on projects, had me pause for a moment: The ones that I admire the most are the ones who win and lose with grace. They put their best foot forward, go all in, and walk away knowing that they did everything within their own control to make the best of the situation.
Let me explain: everyone wants to win, and anyone who works hard, does it to do well, but what if the cards don’t fall as you wish? Do you go around tearing down other buildings so that you feel the tallest? Do you pick apart the race or the other competitors to help yourself feel as if you worked harder than you really did?
Or do you learn from the event and reflect on the data points provided? Did you train properly? Did you have too tall of expectations? Did you reduce friction for yourself in a way that led toward your ultimate goal?
Competition (Or Big Projects, or turning points, or launches of products, etc) allow for great self reflection, if you allow it. You can use your daily workout as a mini daily competition. How do you handle yourself in the gym? Do you push yourself to be better at something EVERY DAY? Work as hard as you can with what you have that given day? Do you respect your peers and people who are in your circle? Or do you make excuses about what you could have done better, neglecting the feelings or efforts of your classmates or family?
How you handle yourself at ANY finish line matters more than any placing or result. People won’t remember how you placed, they will remember how you carried yourself through the process.
How can YOU handle yourself in a way that people look to you with honor and respect?
