Every year, the global CrossFit community comes together to celebrate the Worldwide Open, a three-week gathering of communities to celebrate fitness and challenge you on a whole new level. CrossFit Headquarters releases specific workouts on Thursdays at 3pm Eastern. We do them as a class in our regular class format on Fridays, or one additional opportunity at the 830am class on Sundays.

By participating in the Open season, we show what’s magical about our global CrossFit community. The magic of CrossFit is never more fully on display than in CrossFit gyms during the Open, when hundreds of thousands of people surprise themselves and each other with what they’re able to accomplish as a result of their consistency. Every year, people express concern about the “competition” but we assure you, the Open at Harpoon is a far cry from competition and more in line with celebrating your accomplishments.

Highlights to Note:
We designate the workouts with a naming device that illustrates the Year[point]The Week. So the first workout is 23.1, meaning it’s the first workout in 2023.

Each week will have a {Theme} & [A Cook off]
23.1 (Feb. 17): {Rainbow Party}[Balls: Make us your best energy ball! We all have them: Nuts & Seeds, peanut butter, oatmeal, etc!]
23.2 (Feb. 24): {Wigs & Hats}[Muffins or Cupcakes: This does not have to be the “healthy option but you know what we mean: Blueberry Banana, Banana Energy, Tomato Soup, etc.”]
23.3 (March 3): {Twin Day}[Cookies: This is just an excuse to have Kara make her Chocolate Chip Cookies again]
*Don’t worry about bringing enough for the whole gym. Aim to bring 12-24 of each, and we will divide and taste test!

**Each week, we will announce a winner of both theme and cook-off. That team earns bonus points. More on the details of this below…

2023 Rules of engagement:
Find a partner to join in on the fun! This year, we are competing against each other as teams of TWO! Some of my seasoned veterans, please include new faces that you know might be intimidated by this.

Each week will have a theme and a task, and include MANY different opportunities to score for your team. The PR whiteboard at the gym will be HomeBase when it comes to scoring, and we ask that you tally your own Team totals by Monday every week.

How you score points:
+1 Complete an Open workout, regardless of changes or modifications.

+1 For every Personal Record that is accomplished. For example, “Brit strung together 25 DUs for the first time and Sadie did her first TTB”. They each earn a point that week, summing two total points for their team.

+1 For each teammate that dresses up for the Theme of the Week.
+5 (no, not 2+5, but 5) if the costumes are “paired,” meaning , Woody & Buzz for Wig & Hat week, Thing 1 & Thing 2 for Twin Day, etc.

+1 For Your Team Bringing a dish to the Cook-off.

+1 For bringing Recipe cards for people to take with them, illustrating what you included in the pot-luck option.

+5 For integrating the cook-off with the theme of the week.

+5 for “Spirit of the Week” award on any given week, meaning your costume WON the week. We will have votes in a jar and the Leadership Team will tally the final opinion.
+5 For the Winner of the Cookoff that week. We will vote on these during each class. We will set up tables in the new side room so that you can taste test.

+1 For every athlete who registers their score at CrossFit.Games.com.

+3 BONUS points if you and your partner did not cry or cuss at one another throughout all three weeks.

+3 BONUS points if you participated in every Open workout.

What if I’m gone during one week? You do not have to complete the workout at Harpoon! Many of you might be leaving for February vacation Week. That’s ok! Just complete the workout, send your partner your score, and we will add it to the whiteboard!

We are also bringing back Friday Night Lights:
We are offering a special offering of Friday Night Classes at 5:30pm to host and rally workouts.

Remember: Friends, families and kids are always welcome to these events, the more the merrier.

Health Insurance Reimbursement Program https://www.crossfitharpoon.com/2023/01/26/health-insurance-reimbursement-program/ Thu, 26 Jan 2023 13:56:52 +0000 https://www.crossfitharpoon.com/?p=9690

Here’s the basic outline for the health insurance reimbursement program.

We are partners with a company called Optum, who partners with your health insurance company to set up reimbursements.

The one most active in our area is through United and is called Renew Active/One Pass.

  • It reimburses up to four visits monthly at $15/visit, with a total of $60 per month.
  • You’ll need to download and track your own attendance (in addition to our Push Press app protocol) through an app call Veritap Concierge Health https://veritap.conciergehealth.co/login
  • Once you download that app, you’ll create a new account, select your Health Insurance Program and scan the Veritap device that’s on the bottom of the Legends whiteboard. It’s a small white puck looking thing that will verify that you were in the building and talk to your health insurance company to reimburse our end of things.

2022: Migration out of 1090 US 1 and into our new home https://www.crossfitharpoon.com/2022/07/25/2022-migration-out-of-1090-us-1-and-into-our-new-home/ Mon, 25 Jul 2022 13:14:30 +0000 https://www.crossfitharpoon.com/?p=9603 Continue to check back here for important dates and locations for our migrations away from 1090 US ROUTE 1.

Should all go according to plan, we will be in the new facility by the early part of September. It will mean that there will be a small gap in regard to a consistent place where we can physically meet, but we have great plans to keep an option each day available for those of you who want to participate. (See more below).

Ideally during that time, we will rent equipment as well as offer at-home programming and outdoor workouts for those of you who wish to stay moving while we transition. We will maintain THIS WEBPAGE current to keep locations, times and updates accurate for those of you continuing on with us.

We have two neighboring gyms who are welcoming Harpoon members who remain members during our time of transition. If you are still a member at Harpoon but would like to continue to be in a gym setting for September, you can visit the following “on the house”:

If you’re interesting in renting equipment, you will be asked to complete a form that looks like this

If you are unable to participate in any outdoor workouts, cannot take home any equipment, and feel as if your August membership is unjust, then we are offering a discount for the month of August. Since many of your memberships run on different days, your August discount will look like this should you choose to request it. We do ask that you request this discount to be applied five days before your bill is due to ensure we have enough time to process the request. Each line is correlated with the date your bill is typically charged. Click here to view.

No matter where or when we move, the wind down schedule for 1090 (our current address), looks like this:
August 27 will be the last day of classes at 1090 and will include a Harpoon 100, a benchmark workout that will commemorate our 10th Anniversary!

We will pack up and check out equipment that day for those of you willing to store and “borrow” our equipment. We will then begin to take down and remove the rig and flooring, hopefully to install at the new location. We are looking for handy folks August 27-31 to help us disassemble 1090 and build out our new facility. All hands on deck, whether for a few hours or a few days, are GREATLY appreciated.

August 28-31: We will not have an indoor location to workout out in, however, we are sketching together some fun activities should the weather permit: That schedule will look something like this

August 28, Sunday: 7am Beach Workout at Long Sands. Meet at the Bath House

August 29, Monday: Outdoor Workout in 1090’s parking lot at 5:30am & 5pm

August 30, Tuesday: Outdoor Workout in 1090’s parking lot at 5:30am & 5pm

August 31, Wednesday: Outdoor Workout in 1090’s parking lot at 5:30am & 5pm

Sept. 1-Move in Date: Similar to above, but depends on our actual move-in date.

*My goal during these times is to visit some of our amazing members who have locations out and around Southern Maine to help showcase their small businesses! Please let me know if you are interested in hosting a workout one day.

In the fall, we will have a new class schedule, similar to current times, but slightly adjusted to accommodate our new location. Stay tuned for details as soon as we have approval.

**Please note, at the new location, no dogs are allowed outside at anytime unless leashed.

022822: Mondays with Maddie: What’s your ripple effect? https://www.crossfitharpoon.com/2022/02/28/022822-mondays-with-maddie-whats-your-ripple-effect/ Mon, 28 Feb 2022 20:31:36 +0000 http://www.crossfitharpoon.com/?p=9566 Harpooners:

Great job on 22.1! We’ve tackled one unforeseen workout in the Open and we only have two more remaining: As coaches, we love seeing you all come together to support one another, try new things and step out of your comfort zone. The Open always leaves funny feelings, and if we harness them in the right direction, they give us a chance to become better athletes, friends and teammates. Take any of the challenges as an opportunity to learn from our gaps rather than a place to talk down to yourself, and you’ll see layers of growth within yourself as you move forward with the rest of the year.

The Open, and my condition, has gotten me thinking a lot about the way our feelings, conversations and emotions ripple through the lives of others.

I’ve been thinking about how much negative conversations, attitudes and demeanors really affect my mood while I’ve been pregnant. People will often ask how I’m feeling, and at eight months in, there’s not much more to say than large and uncomfortable! But as soon as I say it outloud, I feel ungrateful for the gift Stephen and I are welcoming into this world, as we chose this, wished for this and I should have a better outlook on receiving this!

So it naturally gets me thinking about the “complaints” we commonly share in the gym: Our ailments, our hardships, our tidbits of bad luck. I admire those of you who tackle these hardships by counting your blessings, rolling with the punches, and truthfully looking at the situation you’ve been given as “it could be worse.”

I challenge those of you who tend to overshare, blame and complain about these “challenges” to temper your public complaints in a more concerted way: Grab a friend for coffee and talk through what’s going on; practice gratitude for things you DO have; find some quiet time to identify your thoughts. But do your best to leave those complaints away from the open air of a place where we find so much joy! Harpoon should be a place where we can leave our burdens at the door and enjoy an hour (or more!) of uninterrupted focus on ourselves, leaving better, stronger and more at peace with whatever the world throws our way.

We all have a lot going on behind closed doors, and the more we recognize that this world isn’t all about us, the better people we will all become.

Upcoming things you want to know:

  • March is a month of expecting for Harpooners! As an expecting mother, knowing that nourishment will be easy to access is such a blessing! From both Morgan and me, thank you all so much for helping us get back on our feet! Postpartum is no joke!
  • Morgan is expecting her second child in mid March (or as she hopes, any day now!). Here is her Meal TraIn. Her son does have an egg allergy so any accommodations to remove eggs will allow her son to eat the meals, too! Meals can be dropped off at the gym in the front refrigerator!
  • The Volks: Alyssa also set one up for us, as Scoutie is expected March 27. You can sign up for that one here. Meals can be dropped off at the gym in the front refrigerator and one of us will grab them. Thanks Alyssa! This is a dream come true as we welcome our first child and have NO IDEA what to expect!
  • Late Cancel/No-Shows: As of March 1, you will be charged a $10 late cancel fee if you are reserved for 530am and/or Family Room and you do not show up. There are no more mulligans. You can cancel this class up until 9pm, but anything after that, you will see weekly. This is to allow as many to attend that class as possible as it is our highest demand class and we need to respect the class capacity. Thank you for understanding.
  • Golf-specific Program: Joe is looking to launch a 6-week, two or three day per week Golf Prep Program at Harpoon before the first of the golf season. Do you know anyone who might be interested? It would be similar to a Bootcamp-style training specifically geared toward the golfing season. We are gauging interest, availability and timing. Please email joe@puredrivephysio.com to lure in your significant other or bestie!
  • Maddie’s maternity leave: Any day now, I will step away on maternity leave but I have the utmost confidence in the Leadership Team that is in place. Email Lauren info@crossfitharpoon.com should you have any questions whatsoever, and she will direct you to the right person. Kara will lead the programming and coaches, and there will be some shifts in who is coaching what. She’s already been crushing the workouts, so please continue to show her grace as she programs through her first Open!
  • Thank you from the YCSA:  YCSA wanted to say a very big thank you to all of the Harpoon crew for their generous donations on the Christmas tree.  You raised $1050!  We are so grateful for your support! Thank you from 3 of the Harpoon Legends, Michelle Surdoval (YCSA Executive Director), Maureen Monsen (Food Pantry Manager) and Janie Sweeney (Family Service Program Manager)

013122: Mondays with Maddie: The Open is coming; what to expect https://www.crossfitharpoon.com/2022/01/31/013122-mondays-with-maddie-the-open-is-coming-what-to-expect/ Mon, 31 Jan 2022 17:49:33 +0000 http://www.crossfitharpoon.com/?p=9555 Harpooners:

With the 2022 CrossFit Open just around the corner, you’ve been seeing a few more 19.1 or 16.4 names in the Titles of Workouts. These workouts are re-testing of the workouts from previous years, but what the heck is the open you say? For those of you who are new, this is a great opportunity to talk a little about what The Open is and why it’s important!

What is “The Open”? The Open is a worldwide “competition” where CrossFit Home Office publishes workouts that almost every CrossFit gym does at the same time (in your respective classes). The entire goal is to challenge you in different style workouts that unites us as a CrossFit community. Someone else writes the programming, it levels the playing field, and puts you in a position to step outside your comfort zone! Every year during the open, we see sooooo many people try a little harder, get different skills that they’ve never reached before, and build relationships with their peers that are deeper than ever.

It is NOT about judging each other’s performances, overly competing against your peers by putting them down or even questioning “how that person got that score.” It IS a time of community encouragement, rising above self doubt, and taking a chance at doing more than you think your mind is capable of. It shouldn’t be thought of as an event full of pressure, but one of opportunity. How can you surprise yourself?

Although not required, we also highly encourage you to register and submit your scores online through the online database with CrossFit Home Office. This allows you to track progress in a centralized location year over year. It also allows you to track progress directly amongst your peers (i.e. Women in 35-40 category in the US, etc). You can register online by clicking this link.

There are a few small logistical changes that you should be aware of:

  • The Open workouts are on Fridays ONLY and ONLY for three weeks (see below)
  • We are NOT assigning or picking teams this year. We ARE picking three “theme” weeks to commemorate the change in normalcy, so share with your coaches what kind of theme you’d particularly like. Western? Luck of the Irish? Lumberjack? Rainbow week? Give us some ideas!
  • Workouts are now announced by CFHO on Thursdays at 3pm Eastern. They will post different categories (see below) for options on how to scale as well as standards, a scorecard and other notes of performance.
  • Week One, aka “22.1” will be announced on Feb. 24 and will be completed in class on Friday, Feb. 25.
  • Week Two, aka “22.2” will be announced on March 3 and will be completed in class on Friday, March 4.
  • Week Three, aka “22.3” will be announced on March 10 and will be completed in class on Friday, March 11.
  • You must submit your score by Monday night at 8pm Eastern, but I always recommend submitting your score as soon as you complete it so as to not forget.
  • Also new this year, your score will be posted directly to the leaderboard as soon as you submit it, and then will be “verified” by me by Wednesday that week at 8pm. You should see it on the leaderboard RIGHT AWAY.
  • Fridays are the ONLY time to do these workouts. We will not be hosting re-dos in the class this year. Please plan accordingly.

Group Workout Class Times on 2/25, 3/4 & 3/11 are as follows:

  • 5:15am
  • 6:30am *please note that during these three weeks, we will NOT have Bootcamp during this class time. We will resume immediately following The Open.
  • 7:45am
  • 9:00am

Specialty Classes:

  • Educator Power Hour will do these workouts on Thursdays at 3pm in class! The workout will just be announced so there will be a short learning curve.
  • Legends will complete the “Equipment Free” version on Mondays in group class
  • Teens will complete the Teens Scaled Variation on Fridays at 3:30pm
  • Pre-Teens will complete the “Foundations” version on Thursdays at 4:00pm

Here’s an example of how a workout might look:
*Please note this doesn’t even take into account the Masters’ scaling options as that’s also an additional layer of options!

RX Workout:
Complete as many rounds and reps as possible in 14 minutes of:
7 muscle-ups
50 wall-ball shots (14 lb. to 9 ft./20 lb. to 10 ft.)
100 double-unders

Scaled:
Complete as many rounds and reps as possible in 14 minutes of:
7 pull-ups
50 wall-ball shots (10 lb. to 9 ft./14 lb. to 10 ft.)
100 single-unders

Foundations Workout:
Complete as many rounds and reps as possible in 14 minutes of:
7 push-ups
25 air squats
50 jumping jacks

Equipment Free
Complete as many rounds and reps as possible in 14 minutes of:
7 dips between chairs
50 air squats
100 jumping jacks

What other questions do you have around The Open? That’s a lot of information for one email, so let’s touch base in two weeks about other things you might want to know!

Mondays with Maddie 122721: We have a new home for the fall of 2022! https://www.crossfitharpoon.com/2022/01/07/mondays-with-maddie-122721-we-have-a-new-home-for-the-fall-of-2022/ Fri, 07 Jan 2022 13:02:52 +0000 http://www.crossfitharpoon.com/?p=9540 Harpooners:

2021 has been one of the wildest years to date for Harpoon. While we inked our eighth year of operation, we’ve also hit some of the largest speed bumps to date. It’s been exciting, saddening, scary, and all the while, promising. As we close out on a wild year, we’re looking forward to an even better future.

So many of you had heard our landlord, Eldredge, refused to renew our lease come summer of 2022. We’ve been working quietly (although Jeff might not think I’ve been quiet) in the background to find the right space for us, both financially and physically. It hasn’t been easy. This market in our ever-so-popular area to live in, has incredibly high demands at higher prices. As for rental space, York doesn’t have industrial space available for us to occupy: the ceilings are too low, the space is too small, or the town limited our occupancy based on zoning. Our landlords have been firm about our end date and would not flex on our departure. So we went to work.

Today, we officially closed on 87 Cider Hill (in York) as the new location for CrossFit Harpoon. We have a long road ahead of us in regard to design, build out, and occupancy, but the future of Harpoon is now in our hands. My biggest ask for you all right now is to continue with us for the long haul as we head into these hard winter months.

We have a unique opportunity to make additions to our general offerings by moving into a new space. Our dream is to make fitness more accessible to the common public, and we believe we can do that with this space and location. We plan to get back to offering additional Bootcamps (see below on how we are going to integrate this come Jan. 3) and CrossFit classes during the most popular hours. Our air flow, spatial constraints and ventilation will improve drastically.

This is a cool, exciting opportunity to bring more fitness to the town of York. We know you have many options for fitness, at-home or otherwise, right now, but you all continue to show up day in and day out. We are supremely grateful for your continued support, and we hope to show you an amazing future.

The Town of York has been behind us since we originally brought the project to them three months ago, and that’s because of all the greatness that you all as members have helped create. They want to see us succeed, and we are more than happy to continue to support wellness in our community.

There have been many working hands behind the scenes helping to get this project done: Jeff Jellison has been my Bestie for the best part of nine months; he’s ready to kick me to the curb. Rick DiDinato helped me build financial sheet after financial sheet to present to the banks, and in many ways, has been an emotional support through this when things looked incredibly scary. Matt Howell represented us at closing and continues to support us to make sure our ducks are in a row. Nick LaFrance really helped bridge this deal for us by connecting us with the right people. Stephen has taken so many rollercoaster rides with me to support the negotiations and big picture planning; he’s ready to get to work in the teardown releasing some of his internal stressors. And lastly, our Leadership Staff has been wildly strong in keeping you all going while I dealt with the Listings, the Town, the Banks, and Sellers to get something like this done. I know I’ve bent many ears during this transaction, and I’m greatly appreciative of all your advice, guidance and direction.

This is an exciting time to be a part of Harpoon, and we plan to be here for many years to come!

121321 Mondays with Maddie: The 800g Challenge & the new year https://www.crossfitharpoon.com/2021/12/13/121321-mondays-with-maddie-the-800g-challenge-the-new-year/ Mon, 13 Dec 2021 22:06:33 +0000 http://www.crossfitharpoon.com/?p=9529 We are quickly closing in on the end of 2021. Dare I say it has flown by? Not without its challenges, but you all are resilient, hard-working people who keep your eyes on the end of the tunnel. Keep going, the turning point is near!

We are approaching the end of our fundraising drive for the York Community Service Association but there is still plenty of time to contribute! We’re looking for gift cards of any value to any food, gas and essentials store. We will be collecting the gift certificates all the way up until Thursday, Dec. 23, of which we will pass them along to our amazing Legends ladies who will get them where they need to go. Simply place your gift certificate (of ANY amount!) in the cards near the tree and attach the card to the tree. THANK YOU to so many of you who have already donated! It sure is a wonderful gift to give back to those in our small town.

As we approach the new year, we are planning on kicking off 2022 with a Nutrition re-set. So many of you LOVED the #800gChallenge when we completed in a few years ago, so we thought we’d bring it back! This program will be entirely completed through SugarWOD. The goal is to eat MORE, and formally eliminate nothing. Now, by proxy of having to eat more of the good stuff, you might find you have less room for the bad stuff, but hey, we won’t say that’s by design ;). You can read more about it here.

Our in-house Nutrition expert, Alyssa, will be the Gym Lead for this challenge, but the overarching goal is to eat 800 grams, by weight, of fruits and veggies each day. This 4-week challenge focuses on setting a minimum standard of fruits and veggies in the diet without requiring ANY eliminations. This is a great challenge to do with your family, coworkers or even friends to help jumpstart your healthy eating habits for 2022. All we ask is that you commit $5 to Mason jar pot for your “personal” accountability. The Mason jar pot will be awarded to the winner with the most points at the end of the challenge: Beware, Andrew doesn’t mess around in these things, so you might have to devise a plan…

Things you want to know:

  • Who’s ready for Bootcamp upscaled with Joe Things? We are hoping to change two or three morning class times to Bootcamp offerings starting January 3! DM us if you have someone who would be interested in joining us on a punch pass basis two to three days per week? This class would be long, sweaty workouts with an emphasis of movement without the barbell. Joe would incorporate some of his prehab/rehab things as an added strength portion to round out the program. Stay tuned on which classes we will roll this out! Punch passes will run $100 for 5 or $180 for 10. Recurring members will have full access to these class offerings with no additional charge.
  • Christmas Schedule: Dec. 23 will be our Annual 12 Days of Christmas workout. Be sure to plan ahead! Dec. 24 will be AM classes only but as normal (finishing with 8:30am class); Saturday, Dec. 25 we are closed. Dec. 26 will be as normal with Coach Brit!
  • The week of Dec. 27-31, we have a special, off-site gym project where we are looking for able bodies and supporting hands. If you’d like to lend a helping hand to do some secret mission Gym OPS, please reply to this email and let me know when you’re available that week! The official announcement regarding this special project is coming Dec. 27, in our last email of the year.
  • Reminder: Prices changes go into effect January 1, 2022. Unlimited Membership is $170 per month, 3x per week Membership is $145 per month, Youth & Legends Programs will remain the same. If you’d like to prepay for 2022, we will honor the existing pricing structure.

In good health,

Maddie V.
